There are many benefits to working with a professional counsellor on an individual basis. It can be a relief to discuss and share the difficulties and challenges that you either have been, or are struggling with, with someone who is impartial and not involved. It may be that you have a longstanding concern, be encountering new difficulties, or simply have a sense that something isn’t right. Individual counselling can help.

what is counselling?

Counselling is a confidential, professional, relationship between a counsellor (someone with specific training and experience) and a client, it provides you with a safe space to talk about your situation, your past experiences, or your future wishes and goals. The space to talk, along with the knowledge of it being confidential and impartial is arguably considered to be, by far, one of counselling's biggest benefits.

Counselling allows people to navigate their way through the maze of emotional turmoil that life can present. Individual Counselling is also a way of enabling choice or change in such situations.  Traditionally counselling doesn't involve giving advice or directing a client to take a particular course of action however in some cases it can include exactly this.

Counselling can help to normalise your experience and place it in context, bring objectivity, creating distance to look at things critically and help to process and deal with problems of all kinds. This often leads to seeing a problem in a new way and feeling more able to get to grips with it.

What does confidential mean in counselling?

Put simply, whatever is said in the session, remains in the session.

The only exception to this is where a counsellor (in this case, Adam) believes that there is a risk to either yourself, someone else, or by not sharing information the counsellor could be supporting a criminal act in taking place.

The times that a need to break confidentiality arises are very rare. In the unlikely event that this does occur within our work together, wherever possible I will inform and negotiate the sharing of information with you, unless I have reasonable belief that in doing so will increase the risks in a given situation. Under these circumstances, I will seek to discuss the break in confidentiality at the earliest and safest opportunity.

how long will i need counselling?

To this question I always answer, "how long is a piece of string?" Everyone is different, and I believe that everyone’s experience is unique to them and we will plan your therapy to ensure that your own individual needs are met. I have worked with people who expected to be in counselling for years and we have come to resolutions that have worked for them in just a few sessions. Similarly, I have also worked with people who have chosen to stay in counselling for many years because of the extensive benefits they take from it. It really is a case of ‘each to their own’.

Individual counselling can take place on a weekly or fortnightly basis and all counselling sessions are tailored to your specific needs.
