SandStory Therapy is a gentle and safe way of working therapeutically with sand and symbols within a contained sandtray that offers clients the opportunity to tell their 'story in the sand'. It encourages a respectful and sensitive dialogue between the unconscious and the conscious parts of the mind from within is heard, seen and experienced. In turn, this is taken into daily life and natural, very organic shifts occur.

sand therapy - brief history

In history sand and play have used in many ways to help explore your story, it has assisted in meeting the mental heath needs of children as young as 3 and adults upto retirement age and beyond.

Margaret Lowenfeld (1979) began developing the use of sand tray work as an intervention when working with children. It can be sued alongside play therapy in some cases. Sand trays help with the expression of emotional issues.

SANDSTORY THERAPY

SandStory Therapy has it's roots in the narrative tradition of Story-telling and Sandtray Therapy. This latter was developed by Margaret Lowenfeld in the early part of her work in the 1920's. SandStory Therapy is based on traditional Sandplay Therapy and Sandtray therapy and has been developed in a way that complements other therapeutic approaches.

The therapist guides the client in firstly connecting with the sand and then supporting them to use the symbols and sand to create a visual of their story.

Once this is constructed the client is offered to spend time explaining what they would like to explain whilst the therapist listens and then offers a gentle supportive enquiring process which involves exploration of the before, during and after process of the story, as well as exploration of both the inner and outer word and clients experience.
