The demands placed on men can be vast and include areas of life such as personal upbringing, relationships, school, family, college, work, finance, physical health, success, self-image, age - to name just a few! Ongoing pressures can mount up, and cause serious problems with emotional and mental health including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, substance dependency and life crisis.
I have extensive experience of working with men from many different backgrounds and life stages and offer sessions to men of all ages from 16yrs of age through to retirement and beyond. I draw on my wide experience and skills to support men in increasing their emotional health, resilience and live more fulfilling lives.
Men in general, as a population, are taught through 'the school of life' and 'college of existence', the social benchmarks as to what it is 'to be a man'. These are subtle messages which society gives us from birth, through images on the television, to messages within our families of origin and our surrounding networks. These messages can include phrases such as 'be strong', 'be tough' 'you're the man of the house', 'be a real man' and 'brave boys don't cry' or be visual images of what modern day men should look like and how they should act. The general and common theme we find is to keep emotions under control, don't be weak. Whilst it could be argued that with todays modern man, this could be slowly changing, it could also be argued that it isn’t changing nearly fast enough!
This can lead some men to struggle to navigate the challenges that life throws at them such as failure (perceived or otherwise), managing interpersonal relationships, employment or unemployment, anxiety, stress and loss of self-confidence. Often, I have worked with men who have immediately assumed that they are 'losing their mind', 'going mad' or 'having a mental break down' and its only through sitting and thinking through things and maybe introducing them to different ways of looking at things, or some basic emotional skills coaching, that they have been able to regain perspective and find internal resilience which then moves to positive change.
Sessions & cost arrangements
All first meetings are titled as an "initial assessment session". This is an opportunity for us to spend time together and gives us a chance to reach a thorough assessment of the issues that have bought us together. It is also an opportunity for you to assess if you believe that we would be able to work together and ask any questions of me that you may have.
The initial assessment session lasts for around sixty (60) to ninety (90) minutes. In the case of working with young people (16+ yrs of age) some of this time will be spent with both the young person and accompanying parent/guardian/significant accompanying adult, and some of the time with the young person alone. Towards the end of the session we will be able to discuss initial considerations and ideas, and negotiate a way forward.
I offer both time limited (6-8 sessions) or open ended, long term work.
All sessions following the initial assessment are for the therapeutic hour of fifty (50) minutes.
First meeting & initial assessment - £80 (90minute session)
Individual Session - £60 for 50minute session - also known as a therapeutic hour (Following first meeting & initial assessment)
